The Liverpool Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received a call on Thursday reporting that the diving support vessel OMS Pollux had collided with a pile supporting a turbine.
As a result the vessel was leaking marine diesel. The Danish-registered vessel, with around 18 crew on board, remained afloat and there were no reported injuries.
It moved under its own power to a location north of the Port of Liverpool limits, and away from environmentally sensitive areas. The Barrow lifeboat then attended the incident and the ship was escorted in relay by the Barrow, Lytham and Hoylake lifeboats.
A fixed-wing aircraft from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency's counter-pollution team has made a flypast and reported that a surface sheen, 5-10 metres wide and around 0.7 nautical miles in length trailed the vessel. However, unlike heavier forms of fuel, marine diesel should evaporate or disperse naturally.
