Spanish floating projects get EU funding

SPAIN: Two newly proposed floating offshore wind projects off the Spanish coast have been given funding under the European Union's NER 300 programme.

The projects are funded from the EU emissions trading programme

The initiative, which is funded through the EU emissions trading system, has awarded a total of EUR 1 billion to 19 innovative renewable energy projects.

Two floating wind projects are among those to have qualified for the cash. The 26MW Balea project located off the coast of Armintza in the Bay of Biscay will get up to EUR 33.4 million. It will be made up of two 5MW and two 8MW turbines. The machines will be placed on either tension leg platforms or semi-submersible structures.

The 25MW FloCan5 project will get a maximum of EUR 34 million in funding and will be built off the south eastern coast of Gran Canaria in water depths of 30-300 metres. The five 5MW turbines will be installed on floating moored foundations.

When contacted by “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, the office of the EU Commissioner for Climate Action refused to reveal the names of the companies involved in the development of these projects.
