In the application to Danish government's nature agency, revealed by energy publication , Vestas mentioned the possibility of using up to a 10MW turbine with a 200-metre diameter rotor. The submission was made in February.
The application, submitted with developer Energicenter Nord, shows plans for four turbines. A deal to install four V164 8MW turbines was announced by MHI. However, there is also a mention of the possible use of a V200 10MW Vestas turbine.
The application gave details of plans install turbines between 6MW (V160) and 10MW (V200) with rotor diametres of between 160 metres and 200 metres.
It goes on to say the turbines named are examples and subject to change as a result of research and development. It leaves the decision which machine(s) to use open.
All of Vestas' offshore activity was transfered to the MHI Vestas joint venture, which was set up in April. If the plans for a 10MW turbine were moving forward it would have been passed to the new company.
In May, German manufacturer Siemens announced it would unveil a 10MW offshore turbine before 2020.
Update: A spokesperson from MHI Vestas said the company was focussing on developing the V164-8MW turbine. He added the project was always planned to use the V164 and there is no timeline in place to develop a 10MW turbine.
