MHI Vestas wins V164 order

DENMARK: MHI Vestas has won the first supply deal for the V164 8MW turbine that will see the joint venture install the turbines at an onshore project.

The prototype is already in place in Østerild, Denmark

The first four commercial turbines will be constructed on the 32MW Velling Mærsk project in western Denmark, which is being developed by Skovgaard Invest ApS, Energicenter Nord.

MHI Vestas said that the main purpose of the deal is to "test the installation methods and operations and maintenance procedures of the turbine onshore" prior to serial deliveries offshore.

Installation is expected to start in mid-2015. The deal includes a 20-year operations and maintenance agreement.

"The order for the first V164-8.0 MW turbines is a crucial step in the ramp up towards serial production. We will verify the performance, reliability and efficiency of the wind turbine before taking it offshore," said Jens Tommerup, CEO of MHI Vestas.

These turbines will be the first to be installed following the erection of the prototype at the Danish National Test Centre in Østerild earlier this year.

In February, Dong Energy announced that it has chosen the V164 turbine for the up to 258MW extension of the Burbo Bank offshore project off the English west coast.
