Largest US offshore lease open for bidding

UNITED STATES: The US has put new offshore wind leases up for auction for more than 3,000 square kilometres off the coast of Massachusetts.

The lease area is south of Nantucket Sound

The new lease area announced by the Bureau of Ocean Eenrgy Management (BOEM) will be the largest in federal waters and will nearly double the area available for offshore wind in the US.

The Massachusetts Wind Energy Area is located 19 kilometres from the coast. BOEM plans to auction the Wind Energy Area as four leases.

The bureau said it will consult with commercial fishing, shipping bodies, historical interests, environmental groups, and local communities in order to "minimise conflicts and bring clarity and certainty to potential wind energy developers".

The announcement triggers a 60-day period ending on 18 August 2014, before which interested parties must express an interest.
