According to insiders close to the project, Ming Yang was planning to install the two-bladed turbine directly offshore but is now conducting indoor tests instead to ensure any problems are discovered early.
The turbine manufacturer signed a heads of agreement with the Marine Energy Test Centre to build the super-compact drive generator at the Karmoy turbine demonstration project in south-west Norway.
This agreement is subject to conditions but is expected to be finalised by the end of the year.
Ming Yang is also expecting to test the turbine at a wind project offshore in Rudong, east China having signed an agreement with Longyuan Power in 2012.
It bought the license to manufacture and sell the turbine from German designer Aerodyn in 2008.
