The turbine is an evolution of the 128-metre rotor machine that was launched in October last year and has been certified by DNV GL.
According to Gamesa, the new machine, the G132-5MW, generates 3% more power than the previous version.
Gamesa's marketing strategy for the platform is likely to be built around a lower cost of energy (CoE) and greater availability compared with likely competitors.
In terms of the design, the company is highlighting a number of major components that will help reduce CoE. This includes a low weight allowing the turbine to be installed in water depth of 35-metres with a monopile foundation.
The 128-metre version featured a "multismart" nacelle, with a top head mass of 270 tonnes (including transformer, drivetrain and converters), imposing less load on the rest of the structure and enabling the use of a monopile in deeper water than normal.
The drivetrain features a two-bearing main shaft, semi-integrated into a two-stage gearbox with the output shaft set at medium speed.
The first 5MW machine was installed at Arinaga Quay, Gran Canaria, and was largely based on the 4.5MW design the company unveiled in April 2010.
