The desalination plant is located in Dafeng, Jiangsu province and uses a Goldwind 2.5MW turbine, three power storage units and a diesel electric motor.
An independent grid was designed to support the desalination of 10,000 tonnes of sea water a day. The current production line has a capacity of 5,000 tonnes of water.
It was launched in June 2013 by the New Energy Desalinated Sea Water Development Company. Total investment was estimated to be around CNY 235 million ($38 million).
New Energy said it would apply for international patent protection of its micro-grid system and market the system in the future.
The off-grid wind system is a plausible power solution for isolated islands or remote landlocked desert areas. It is considered to be of strategic importance.
Saudi Arabia is among the country's looking at using wind power for desalination plants. As much as 9GW of future capacity could be installed along the Red Sea coast and the Arabian Gulf, which would primarily be used for desalination.
