Areva CEO Luc Oursel told a French parliament hearing that the company is "ready to examine any possibilities" if there is an opportunity to buy the wind business.
In a move to allay the fears of a US takeover of a major French company, GE said in a letter to the French president, François Hollande, that it would be willing to sell Alstom's wind business to French investors if it succeeded in taking over the energy business.
Areva and Alstom have a similar offshore offering, manufacturing 5MW and 6MW turbines. Both have won contracts to build French offshore projects under different tenders.
GE has previously been vocal in its stance against a move into offshore wind, with vice president for renewables Anne McEntee against the company's investment in the market in March.
Siemens is also preparing a bid for Alstom's energy business and is said to be set to make a formal offer as early as this week. It is unclear how Alstom's offshore wind business would fit within Siemens, which is the world's top offshore turbine manufacturer.
