The project was to consist of a 3MW floating turbine at a demonstration site off Spain's north-east coast.
It had already been delayed considerably, with the project undergoing a partnership reshuffle last year, amid rumours that Acciona, which was to supply the turbine, was negotiating its withdrawal.
In October 2013, a spokesperson from Fraunhofer said that the floating platform was "under manufacture" and that the commissioning of the turbine, at a deep water site in the Bay of Biscay, would begin in mid-2014, already a year behind the initial schedule. This is now off the cards.
The project was launched in 2010 as a cooperation between 19 European companies from eight countries. The EUR 20 million project was 60% funded by the European Union, the largest investment by the EU in an offshore wind research project.
The turbine would have been mounted on an anchored triangular structure. Each triangle corner, with a 30-metre separation, would have rested on 20-metre submerged steel conical tubes.
