GERMANY: Tennet has signed a long-term framework agreement with risk management firm 6 Alpha Associates for the provision of unexploded ordinance survey advice.

Over a ten-year period 6 Alpha will oversee risk management and seabed surveys related to the German grid operator's offshore cabling work.

The agreement will see 6 Alpha assess risks for all of Tennet's cable installation projects. It will develop risk mitigation measures including designing geophysical surveys along cable routes and ensure they are accompanied by unexploded ordinance "sign-off certificates".

A number of projects have been held up by the discovery of munitions on the seabed, with the North Sea a particular trouble spot. Tennet already has experience of the effects of unexploded ordinance on offshore wind project development.

The Riffgat wind farm in the German North sea had been scheduled for completion last July, but the discovery of a large number of unexploded bombs caused long delays, with the project only connected in February.

Tennet said that it hopes that bringing in 6 Alpha to mitigate risk will Improve project safety, de-risk project schedules and generate investor confidence.
