The move will combine Narec’s research and testing facilities and ORE Catapult’s industrial contacts and engineering expertise to accelerate design, deployment and commercialisation of renewable energy technology.
The chief executive of ORE Catapult, Andrew Jamieson, will lead the organisation, while Andrew Mill will step down as Narec chief executive to become a non-executive director at ORE Catapult.
Jamieson said the merger would create a world-leading innovation business serving the UK’s offshore renewable sector.
"We will play a leading role in ensuring the UK replicates the success of the oil and gas industries, creating many thousands of skilled jobs, contributing billions of pounds to the economy and ensuring that the UK has a major influence on European policy," he said.
Earlier this year, ORE Catapult entered in to a data sharing initiative with UK seabed manager the Crown Estate in a bid to reduce the costs of offshore wind energy.
