Dominion Virginia Power partnered with Virginia's Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy to establish the Virginia Offshore Wind Technology Advancement Project to install two Alstom 6MW offshore wind turbines off the state’s coast.
BOEM is seeking views on the project as part of an environmental assessment to analyse potential impacts of the project.
In September Dominion Virginia Power submitted a $1.6 million bid in the US's second offshore wind competitive lease auction, winning the right to develop nearly 113,000 acres off the coast of Virginia.
A lease was formally awarded in Decemeber.
The Virginia pilot was one of seven to share a $28 million award made by the US Department of Energy in 2012. The grants aim to reduce the cost of offshore wind by addressing various technological challenges.
