Siemens upgrades 3MW turbine

GERMANY: Siemens has revealed details of its newly 3.2MW uprated version of its 3MW direct drive machine.

The new machine is based on Siemens' 3MW turbine

The German manufacturer said that this new version can yield a 4% higher annual energy output compared with the previous version.

A nameplate capacity increase from 3MW to 3.2MW has been achieved by improving the turbine control system, Siemens revealed.

Previously announced installations of the new turbine feature a 113-metre rotor at a 92.5-metre hub height.

“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Montlhy first wrote about the turbines in October, when few details were available. In this deal, Siemens sold 53 of the new turbines to Turkish developer Guris Group, for installation on three wind farms in the country.

In February, Utility Minnesota Power chose the turbine for its 204MW project in North Dakota. The German manufacturer will install 64 of the enhanced turbines on the fourth phase of the Bison wind farm.

The 3MW platform with a permanent-magnet generator was launched in 2010. This newly uprated turbine will be officially unveiled at EWEA 2014 in Barcelona next week.
