Fred Olsen wins US offshore installation work

UNITED STATES: Fred Olsen has been handed the contract to install the turbines at the 30MW Block Island offshore wind project.

Fred Olsen's Bold Tern vessel will perform the work

Developer Deepwater Wind has chosen the Norwegian shipping company to carry out the work on the five 6MW Alstom Halide turbines.

Work will be carried out by the Fred Olsen's Bold Tern jack-up vessel with its 800-tonne rated cranes.

The project moved a step closer to reality in January, with state authorities offering no objection to the plans.

Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, the leading permitting agency for the project, is still to hold a public hearing on the plans, but has issued a positive preliminary judgement.

The commissioning has been pushed back from 2014 to 2016 following a number of delays due to local objections and legal issues.

Alstom was handed the turbine supply deal earlier in February.
