The A$1.5 billion (US$1.4 billion) in the state of South Australia will feature 197 Senvion (formerly Repower) M114-3.2MW turbines.
Following the approval by the South Australia government, Senvion said it had meet what it called rigorous environmental regulations required for the sensitive area.
"Development approval is a very important milestone for this project, and we will now concerntrate on completing the connection approval and finalising commercial feasibility," said Peter Sgardelis, head of development for Senvion Australia.
The Suzlon-owned company has had to modify the layout of the project in order to meet "community concerns" that came out of hearings over the last couple of months.
Planned turbines were rearranged so that they were further from other land owners' property and one turbine was removed under the new proposals.
Unusually, the project on York Peninsular will not feature any overhead cables, but will instead use an undersea cable to connect it to the South Australia transmission network near Adelaide.
Due to the area's high fire risk, the company has committed to providing dedicated fire fighting equipment and vehicles on site.
Construction is expected to start by the end of the year, with completion due in 2016.
