Developer Longyuan Power said the Naqu wind farm, consisting of five wind turbines with total capacity of 7.5MW, were connected to the grid this month.
According to Longyuan's plan, another twenty eight Guodian 1.5MW turbines will be installed in this 49.5MW.
The project sits in Naqu county in northern Tibet, at 4,700 metres above sea level. As a result, the turbines need to cope with low temperature, low air density, and high wind speeds.
China's National Energy Administration granted approval for the project in March 2012.
Tibet's annual wind energy reserves amount to 93 billion/kWh, the seventh largest in China. The project is also the first wind farm in Tibet. It leaves Macau the last Chinese region without wind farms.
