The two projects will be located in Northern Cape province and will be jointly developed by Longyuan Power, South Africa's Mulilo Renewable Energy and a local community company.
Longyuan Power will be the majority shareholder of the De Aar phase 1 and 2 projects (100MW and 144MW) with subsidiary Guodian United Power providing 1.5MW wind turbines.
The company was given preferred bidder status for two projects at the third round renewable energy project tenders held by South Africa's Department of Energy. The planned capacity for open tenders in this round is 653.4MW but the winning projects' total capacity reached 787MW.
Longyuan Power is China's first state-owned power company to invest in the international renewable energy sector. Last year, it acquired rights to develop the 100MW Dufferin wind farm in Ontario.
Another big winner in the South African tender was Mainstream Renewable Power. The Irish developer was awarded contracts to build three wind farms in South Africa amounting to 360MW.
