Greek wind power resurgence in September

GREECE: Despite Greece's economic problems, the country's regulatory authority for energy (RAE) said 1,382MW of new wind farm applications were submitted in September.

PPC Renewables, the wholly-owned subsidiary of national electricity company the Public Power Corporation (PPC), submitted applications for a portfolio of 1.047GW of projects in various Greek isles (Astypalaia, Milos, Kimolos, Amorgos, Kithnos, Kos, Sikinos, Folegandros and Tilos).

A further 335.2 MW of applications were also submitted to RAE. Of these, Edison applied for two projects (52.8MW and 33MW) on the islands of Evia and Andros respectively.

Gamesa applied for a 58MW project in Kozani, northern Greece. And Terna Energy applied for 72MW spread across four projects in Boeotia prefecture, central Greece.

The rest of the projects applications belong to smaller Greek companies, with the Energoplan application for a 57.5MW wind farm in the island of Evia standing out.

September's applications follow a rather quiet year for the Greek wind energy sector. Cumulative wind power capacity in Greece in the end of August stood at 1.81GW, of which only 52MW was brought online in 2013.
