Iberdrola Renewables wins bid for 1GW New Mexico wind site

UNITED STATES: Oregon-based Iberdrola Renewables won the commercial lease bid for the proposed 1GW El Cabo wind farm in Torrance County, near Albuquerque, New Mexico.

New Mexico auctioned 34,000 acres of land, awarding a 45-year lease.

The project will be built over several phases over the next 10 years, with construction for 300MW of Phase I starting this year.

Mark Stacy, Iberdrola Renewables’ development director said: "Winning this bid is an important achievement in our ongoing efforts to bring the El Cabo project to fruition."

A live public auction was held on September 19 at the Torrance County Courthouse in Estancia, New Mexico.
