4,500 vow to pay premium for Erie wind power

UNITED STATES: More than 4,500 people have pledged to pay extra for electricity from a wind farm based in lake Erie.

President of Leedco, Laurie Wagner

The Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (Leedco) of Cleveland expects to start construction on the 18MW Icebreaker offshore project in 2016 and commission the wind farm in 2017.

The company said the pledges would be important when Leedco applies for licenses and when it negotiates with independent power suppliers.

"Community engagement and support are critical to our success, and the support we have received is very encouraging for the future of offshore wind in the Great Lakes," Lorry Wagner, president of Leedco told Cleveland's North East Echo.
