Vestas starts wind industry's biggest test bench

A 20MW test bench, claimed to be the wind industry's largest and most powerful, has started operation at Vestas' global testing centre in Denmark.

Giant new bench will test Vestas 8MW offshore turbine

The test bench will analyse Vestas' new V164-8MW turbine, reproducing the North Sea’s wind conditions, to validate its performance, robustness and reliability.

Sited in the Danish port city of Aarhus, the test bench is 42 metres long, nine metres wide and weighs, including motors, wind simulator and generators, nearly 700 tonnes.

Vestas installed 50-metre deep concrete foundations to support the test bench’s weight, which will stress the drivetrain, including gearbox, main shaft and generator of the 8MW turbine over a 25-year lifetime.

Anders Vedel, Vestas chief technology officer, said: "Vestas has invested in the industry’s most powerful test bench to ensure the turbine will perform in challenging conditions for 25 years."
