The programme allows wind energy projects in the country to be accredited under the Clean Development Mechanism of the United Nations Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC).
This means that any certified CO2 emission reductions (CER) achieved by the wind generation may be traded within the European emissions trading system, earning additional income to the Argentinian wind station owner.
Thanks to the efforts of wpd Argentina, a subsidiary of German wind developer wpd, and German consultants Fichtner Carbon Management, wind energy projects developed by wpd as well as other companies can benefit, the companies said 19th August 2013.
A pilot 18MW Puerto San Julián Wind project was developed on the property of fashion company the Benetton Group in southern Argentina by wpd Argentina for the programme, and may later be extended to several hundred megawatts once the transmission grid has been expanded.
