Toronto developer SouthPoint Wind is seeking more than C$1 billion in damages relating to its proposed wind farm in Lake Erie’s water, which has been put on hold as a result of the provincial government’s moratorium on offshore wind projects.
Last September, developer Trillium Power filed a similar claim for C$2.25 billion after the administration suspended all Great Lakes wind farms on environmental grounds earlier in the year.
SouthPoint Wind claims the government "acted deceptively and deliberately" when it terminated applications for offshore schemes without notice, according to local media outlets.
Last February, the Ontario government announced it would no longer accept applications for offshore wind projects under its feed-in tariff programme and would suspend those already filed.
The provincidal government said it would defend itself against the claims.
