TÜV Nord to certify Sinovel offshore turbine

6MW machine to meet int'l standards

China’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, Sinovel, has awarded certification and inspection provider, TÜV Nord, the task of overseeing type certification for its 6MW SL6000 offshore wind turbine.

Achieving certification is a crucial step in allowing Sinovel to sells its offshore-specific turbine on the global market.

Commenting on the contract win, TÜV Nord’s head of wind power services, Lars Sitzki, said the company has "identified considerable demand for internationally-recognised certification in China". It is TÜV Nord’s first such contract with Sinovel.

TÜV Nord’s initial focus will be to assess Sinovel’s turbine design. Prototype testing will follow, and, finally, production monitoring. A prototype of the SL6000 was completed last May and installed for testing last autumn. The design boasts a rotor diameter of 128m.

Last year, TÜV Nord’s annual revenue exceeded the €1bn mark for the first time, representing an increase of more than 11%. Profit (EBIT) rose more sharply – by more than 18% - to reach €43.4m.
