The developer of a five-turbine 30MW offshore wind farm, planned for waters off the US state of Rhode Island, has been given permission to proceed by the country’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).
The Block Island project could be the US’ first offshore wind farm, said developer, Deepwater Wind, in response to the BOEM’s ruling that there is "no competitive interest" that would warrant refusing permission for installation of a transmission cable linking the Block Island project to the mainland.
Deepwater Wind applied to the BOEM for permission to install the cable last November. Objections were due in June. The wind farm will be connected both to the mainland grid and to nearby Block Island. As previously reported by “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore, Block Island’s local government has agreed to support the project in exchange for funds and improvements to the island’s communications systems.
