Testing of Vestas’ long-awaited 7MW offshore turbine will not begin until 2014, the company said today, as it announced financial results for the first half of 2012.
The world’s largest wind turbine manufacturer provided little information about recent progress toward commercialising its V164-7.0MW design. But it did state that it had "received inquiries from potential partners" and that these were being "evaluated". It expects to install the first V164-7.0MW prototype in 2014 in Denmark.
Last year, Vestas said it would install the prototype in 2013, at Dong Energy’s offshore site near Frederikshavn.
Downsizing
Vestas’ latest results are poor, with Q2 profits (before interest and exceptionals) sliding 40%, to €40m. The company also announced a further 1,400 job losses, on top of the more than 2,300 detailed earlier this year. It has also downgraded its 2013 shipments forecast, to 5GW.
The Danish company has trailed Siemens in the offshore wind turbine market. Its only recent deal to supply an offshore project was Northwind’s order of 72 V112-3.0MW machines.
