The Italian environment ministry has released a positive environmental impact assessment for a 30MW offshore wind project off the port of Taranto, in the southern region of Apulia.
The project’s developer, Societ Energy, will install ten 3MW turbines in shallow waters just 100m off the coast. Vestas is mentioned in the local press as the turbine supplier.
The Apulia regional authorities rejected the project last November, but the environment ministry has said it can go ahead, provided adequate monitoring of its effects on sea and bird life is introduced.
The developer will also have to carry out expert archaeological surveys to avoid any possible damage to ancient remains in the area.
