The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult has appointed Andrew Jamieson as its chief executive officer. He joins from ScottishPower Renewables, where he was policy and innovation director.
Overseen by the UK's Technology Strategy Board, Catapults aim to bring together business, academia, research and government. The goal is to accelerate economic growth by encouraging business-led innovation.
The Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult will become operational in 2013. Located within the International Technology and Renewable Energy Zone (ITREZ) in Glasgow, it aims to aid the development of commercially viable offshore wind, wave and tidal power technologies. It will also have an operational facility at the National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) in Blyth, Northumberland.
In his new role, Jamieson will be responsible for delivering the Catapult's objectives. He brings over 20 years of energy-sector experience with him. He joined ScottishPower in 1988 and ScottishPower Renewables in 2004, taking on responsibility for energy policy and regulation. He is also the chairman of industry lobby group RenewableUK and recently chaired the Government-Industry Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Task Force.
Jamieson said he was "delighted" at becoming the Catapult's CEO. The UK's Business Secretary, Vince Cable, welcomed his appointment, adding that Jamieson had "exactly the sort of skills and background needed to lead the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult".
