Proposals for four offshore wind power projects in the 500MW range have been submitted to authorities of the wind-rich India state of Tamil Nadu. The proposed wind farms would be located off the coast of Rameshwaram and Kanyakumari.
A meteorological mast to collect wind resource data is to be installed at Dhanushkodi near Rameshwaram, as recently reported by “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore.
Tamil Nadu’s offshore wind power potential has been estimated to be in excess of 127GW and the state is putting pressure on the Indian national government to develop policies to promote offshore generation.
India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has appointed Rajeev Ranjan to chair a committee that will assess the prospects of offshore wind energy across India. Ranjan already chairs Tamil Nadu’s electricity board.
Commenting specifically on Tamil Nadu’s potential, Ranjan said: "It is evident that offshore wind deployment in Tamil Nadu could become commercially viable despite high costs."
Tamil Nadu currently has an onshore wind power capacity of 7GW, representing 40% of India's total wind capacity. It is looking to install another 10GW by 2023. The state boasts a coastline of about 910km.
