The transmission system operator (TSO) building Germany’s offshore wind electricity network in the North Sea, TenneT, has hired consultancy Intertek to help it design and manage the geophysical and geotechnical surveys that must be completed prior to the installation of export cables and offshore substations.
The one-year contract will see Intertek assist TenneT with survey specifications, invitations to tender, bid reviews and contract negotiations, explained Intertek business development manager, George Smith, speaking with “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore.
The TenneT contract is a significant win for Intertek, which is known for its marine cable expertise.
Until now, the consultancy’s involvement in the German offshore wind market has focused on technical due diligence. In this, it has partnered with Sgurr Energy, providing technical advice about Borkum West II, Global Tech I, Gode Wind II, Butendiek and one other unnamed project.
TenneT is under pressure to increase the speed with which it builds the North Sea offshore wind cable network. Delays in its grid expansion programme have become a significant political issue in Germany, as developers such as RWE fear their offshore wind projects will be stranded.
