Negotiations are still continuing between Eletrobras Furnas and China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) about their Jiangsu province offshore wind joint venture.
Furnas, a subsidiary of the Brazilian government-owned electricity company, Eletrobras, has to resolve the problem of statutory limitations on its ability to invest capital in a project based in a foreign country, according to Pedro Motta, superintendent for new business projects at Furnas.
The technical and business risks involved in the construction of the 200MW project are also still being studied, Motta told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore.
The project involves three possible arrays of turbines, according to CTGC: 100 units of 2MW turbines, 80 units of 2.5MW turbines or 67 units of 3MW turbines.
The site of the wind farn has already been chosen by CTGC based on studies of wind speed, distance to the grid connection, environmental conditions and financial issues, Furnas told WO. The main permits for the project have also been received.
The two companies hope to develop further joint ventures in the offshore wind sector but nothing concrete will be decided until this initial venture has been fully agreed and its development is underway, according to Furnas.
"Being the first project of its sort, naturally it will take longer to develop," said Motta. Construction was originally scheduled to begin in the second half of 2012, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the two countries late last year.
