Mecal envisages 12MW turbine

North Sea is target market for next-generation technology

Designing the next generation in offshore turbine technology – and allowing the industry to leap from the incoming 5-8MW range to 12MW - has been occupying the best minds at Dutch consultancy, Mecal.

The result is a 12MW design concept with 200m rotor diameter and 120m hub height. Mecal’s preliminary ideas for a cost-effective 12MW turbine suitable for North Sea conditions will be unveiled this week, at the annual conference of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) in Vienna.

Reducing cost of energy (CoE) has been the underlying principle of Mecal’s work on a 12MW design, with a 40% cut on CoE acting as the project target. Three drive train technologies were assessed — high-speed, direct drive and an intermediate ‘hybrid’.
