A Swedish land and environment court has rejected military objections to the construction of a 2.5GW wind farm in waters off southern Sweden. The ruling paves the way for central government authorities to approve the project.
After hearing arguments that the Blekinge Offshore project near Hanö Bay would compromise national security, the Land and Environmental Court ruled in favour of the developer.
"The decision could not have been more positive," Blekinge Offshore chief executive Anders Nisson told “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore, after reading the court’s decision. Nisson hopes that final approval from the government will come within a year. Authorities have been positive about the project to date. Even if Sweden’s Conservative-led coalition loses the next election, he believes the Social Democrat party will also be supportive.
Situated in Area 4 of the Swedish power grid, the Blekinge project would avoid difficulties with the country’s north-south electricity transmission bottlenecks, as well as close proximity to industry and population centres.
Nilsson added that the wind farm would probably feature two turbine models rated between 3.5MW and 5.0MW. "We have not decided on a supplier yet, but we are aiming to maximize capacity," he said.
