Action should be taken now to ensure the EU maximises its use of "indigenous" renewable energy sources, including offshore wind, argues a report published by environmental NGO, WWF. Offshore wind could contribute 5.6% of EU electricity generation by 2030, according to the report, entitled Re-energising Europe.
Presenting a vision for 100% renewable energy supply in the EU by 2050, WWF suggests that offshore wind could contribute 0.6 Exajoules per year (EJ/yr) in little more than 15 years' time. This output would be exceeded by larger contributions from onshore wind (2.0EJ/yr), solar photovoltaic (2.0EJ/yr), and hydropower (1.7EJ/yr) generation.
The report is part of WWF's efforts to convince EU policymakers to draft energy demand management and renewable energy targets for the post-2020 period.
