Installation of a 2,000 tonne offshore electricity transformer station designed to serve the 108MW Riffgat wind farm off the German North Sea island of Borkum has been completed, according to the project’s 90% owner, EWE Vertrieb. Thirty Siemens 3.6MW turbines will begin to be shipped to the wind farm site in April, with all units due to be installed and commissioned this summer.
Riffgat’s foundations have been in place since late last summer, having been installed by Seaway Heavy Lifting ahead of schedule. Fred Olsen's Windcarrier is contracted to undertake turbine installation.
The project is primarily owned by EWE Vertrieb, a subsidiary of large German regional energy company EWE, with a 10% stake held by Enova Energiesysteme. It is one of several offshore wind farms currently under construction in German waters and should contribute to what is expected to be by year end - the country’s biggest annual jump in offshore wind-generated electricity output to date.
