German support for Catalan offshore project

Catalan Energy Institute collaborates with EWE

An agreement has been signed between the Catalan energy institute and German offshore wind developer EWE. The two will "set up a collaborative framework", IREC announced today.

EWE is joint owner (47.5%) and operator of the 60MW Alpha Ventus pilot offshore wind farm in the German North Sea and is currently building the 108MW Riffgatt project, of which it owns 90%.

Meanwhile, IREC is developing a near-shore, deep-water turbine test site off the Catalan coast, at Tarragona. The first phase of IREC's Zèfir project will have a capacity of 10-20MW.

IREC and EWE have agreed to share technical information and know-how, to hold joint training courses for engineers, and to carry out research and development. IREC says it will be able to "learn from the experience of the plant in operation in Germany".
