London Array 1 has officially become the world’s largest operational offshore wind farm. The milestone was achieved yesterday, 7 March. Four-fifths (141) of the 175 3.6MW Siemens turbines are now energised, providing 507MW of capacity.
The wind farm's operational capacity now exceeds Greater Gabbard's 504MW.
First power at London Array was achieved in October 2012 and the final turbines were installed a few weeks later. The 630MW project is due for completion this spring. The development of London Array 2 could see a further 240MW of capacity added, possibly by 2017.
Dong Energy currently owns half of London Array 1, while E.ON owns 30% and Masdar the remaining 20%. The sale of half of Dong's stake may be on the cards, with the developer reportedly having begun discussions with Canadian pension fund, Caisse de Dépôt et Placement du Québec.
