$44m substation contract awarded for Luchterduinen

Van Oord contracts CG, Cofely Fabricom and Iemants

A contract has been awarded for the construction of an offshore electricity convertor station for the Luchterduinen offshore wind farm. The 129MW project is being developed in Dutch waters, with full commissioning due in late 2015.

EPC contractor Van Oord has appointed three Belgian companies to work on the $44m (€34.3m) contract: CG Global, Cofely Fabricom and Iemants.

Cofely Fabricom will oversee contract delivery and provide the site for topside assembly. It is also expected to choose the substation installation contractor, which is likely to be Deme Group.

Cofely Fabricom has previously been involved in the construction of offshore substations for London Array and Thornton Bank. It is owned by French industrial giant, GDF Suez.

Meanwhile, CG will design, engineer and manufacture the electrical system for Luchterduinen’s offshore substation. It will complete its work by August 2015. Already a leading player in offshore wind electrical systems, this is CG’s sixth order for an offshore convertor station electrical system. It also manufactured the electrical system for Belwind’s offshore substation and has been commissioned to build systems for Butendiek, Amrumbank West, Humber Gateway and Northwind. CG is part of Indian-owned Avantha Group.

Iemants will design and fabricate the topside and jacket foundation for the Luchterduinen offshore substation. In addition to building substations for Belwind and London Array, Iemants has won similar contracts to supply West of Duddon Sands, Butendiek, Amrumbank West and Humber Gateway. It is rumoured to be the frontrunner for a German offshore wind substation project.

Early this year, Mitsubishi announced its acquistion of a 50% stake in Luchterduinen, with the remainder held by Dutch utility Eneco. The wind farm will be powered by Vestas V112 3MW turbines, despite Mitsubishi being an emerging player within the offshore turbine market, with its in-development 7MW Sea Angel design.
