The UK Planning Inspectorate has passed a recommendation on RWE’s planned 1.2GW Triton Knoll offshore wind farm, to the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). DECC will make a final regulatory decision and must announce its decision by 17 July 2013.
RWE submitted its consent application for Triton Knoll in early 2012. It is planned for a site in the North Sea, 33km off the Lincolnshire coast. Public consultation on the onshore electricity transmission infrastructure is ongoing. If Triton Knoll is approved, offshore construction could begin in 2017.
Earlier this year, RWE successfully sold 50% of its 90MW Rhyl Flats offshore wind farm, as part of a strategy to reduce its stake in operational assets in order to help fund future projects. And last month, the German-owned utility acknowleged that its debts meant that it would build offshore wind capacity more slowly than originally planned.
RWE owns 60% of 576MW Gwynt y Môr, which is currently under construction. Turbine installation is due to begin this month, with first power anticipated this summer.
