Specialist sea bed protection work is being carried out, at EDF's Teesside offshore wind farm. The developer appointed Marske Site Services (MSS) of Stokesley, near Middlesbrough, to undertake the work.
It involves the placement of large nets filled with loose stones, around the base of each of the 27 turbine positions. The Maersk Responder is being deployed at the project site off Redcar.
The installations will protect the foundations from any removal of sea bed sediment caused by wave and tidal movement. Tim Bland, project manager, also noted the potential benefits for the marine environment. "This new sea bed habitat provision at the base of each turbine can increase biodiversity and the abundance of marine species in the vicinity of the wind farm," he said.
Sixteen of the 27 Siemens 2.3MW turbines are now in place and work is continuing on testing and commissioning them. The 62MW project is due for completion shortly.
