First power has been achieved at DONG Energy's Gunfleet Sands 3 development. It is now exporting power to the National Grid. The 12MW demo project – built 8.5km off Clacton-on-Sea in the Thames estuary – will host the first offshore tests of Siemens' new 6MW turbine.
Benj Sykes, DONG's UK country manager, said the project represented "a significant step in our work to reduce the cost of energy in offshore wind". The developer plans to install the Siemens 6MW units at its 240MW Westermost Rough project, planned for a site off the Yorkshire coast. It also recently agreed a deal with Siemens, for the supply of 154 of the 6MW turbines to the Gode Wind 1, 2 and 3 projects, in the German North Sea.
