Aerial video surveys of marine birds and mammals for Dong Energy’s German offshore wind projects will be undertaken by HiDef. The UK company has also won a contract that will see its data used by German offshore wind regulator, BSH.
The two contracts represent entry into the German market for the Cumbria-based company, which is the world’s first supplier of digital video surveys for offshore wind clients. The contracts have been awarded by environmental consultancy, BioConsult, which is advising Dong on its German projects, and University of Kiel, which is due to report to BSH on cumulative impacts of offshore wind farms.
Dong is one of HiDef’s clients in its home market of the UK and the company is also active in the USA. Earlier this year, it won a contract to undertake aerial surveys of waters off the state of Maryland, in preparation for a planned offshore wind farm.
Collision monitoring technology
HiDef has also developed a new technique for monitoring bird turbine collisions and avoidance rates. In partnership with Centrica, HiDef recently tested its technology for nine months at an undisclosed site in the Greater Wash area, off England’s east coast.
The stereoscopic-based technology was able to differentiate between nine key species and to provide much more information about collision avoidance rates and about the differing behaviour of specific species, explained HiDef director, Mark Robinson, speaking with “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Offshore.
