UK regains top spot for investment attractiveness

UK, Germany and China take first three positions

Ernst and Young's latest study has placed the UK at the top of the global list of countries of interest to offshore wind investors. Its Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index places the UK offshore wind sector above that of Germany, which swaps places with the UK in the rankings. China lies third, Belgium fourth and Denmark fifth.

Ernst and Young's environmental finance leader, Ben Warren, said: "There has never been a better time to turn the UK into the go-to market for investment in renewable energy in Europe." He also called for the Energy Bill to become law as soon as possible, to provide clarity for investors.

RenewableUK welcomed the study's findings. Its director of offshore renewables, Nick Medic, said: "The UK's offshore wind sector is at number one where it rightly belongs. The challenge now is to ensure that it stays there."

The UK currently has 3.3GW of installed offshore wind capacity, outstripping the rest of the world combined. The world’s largest offshore wind farm – the 630MW London Array 1 – became fully operational in April.
