GL Garrad Hassan has launched a project aimed at developing offshore turbines and contributing to cost reduction. Project FORCE (turbine optimisation FOr Reduced Cost of Energy) will consider new and innovative technologies for offshore applications. Focused on 7-10MW turbines, the goal is to lower the cost of energy from offshore wind farms.
Results of the project are expected in late 2013. They will "enhance the support we can offer our clients, as well as leading the industry towards a cost-sustainable future", said Tim Camp, head of GL Garrad Hassan’s Turbine Engineering Competence Centre.
The UK government’s Offshore Wind Cost Reduction Task Force outlined the way towards offshore wind achieving a levelised cost of energy of £100/MWh by 2020, while technology acceleration has been identified as a way of achieving significant cost reductions.
