Germany's transmission system operators (TSOs) responsible for cable offshore links to shore have agreed to closely cooperate to ensure a steady growth of offshore wind capacity.
The TSOs will set up three joint project groups to draw up suggestions by autumn 2013 on how this can be achieved. They will also explore efficient use of cable connections currently being built and how to reduce their cost.
Tennet, which is responsible for cable links in the North Sea, and 50Hertz, for those in the Baltic Sea, plan to work more closely with wind farm operators to ensure better coordination.
Offshore wind developers have been hit by cable construction in Germany. More recently, the TSOs that cable projects may have to wait for the corresponding capacity. Offshore wind investment decisions are due to uncertainty about the future support framework.
About 3GW of German offshore capacity is due for completion by 2015. The German Offshore foresees 14GW by 2023.
