Macquarie-led consortium wins Sheringham Shoal transmission link

Blue Transmission consortium awarded OFTO lease

UK: Blue Transmission, a consortium that includes Macquarie Capital and Barclays Infrastructure Funds Management, was yesterday granted a licence to own and operate the transmission link for the Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm.

Energy regulator Ofgem awarded the licence to the consortium, which also includes Mitsubishi subsidiary Diamond UK Transmission Corporation and asset manager Frontier Power, on Thursday at the same time as it announced the  for West of Duddon Sands’ grid link.

The 317MW Sheringham Shoal project off the coast of North Norfolk is owned and operated by Statoil and Statkraft. The two firms built the project’s transmission link via a specially created company, Scira Offshore Energy.

Blue Transmission has agreed to pay Scira Offshore Energy £193 million (€226 million) for the transmission link, the largest transaction to date in Ofgem’s Offshore Transmission Owner (OFTO) regime of selling off UK offshore transmission links via a competitive tendering process.

So far all OFTO leases tendered have been won by just two companies: Transmission Capital Partners, a joint venture of infrastructure investors Transmission Capital Partners and Amber Infrastructure, and Blue Transmission.

Blue Transmission also owns the OFTO leases for Walney 1 and 2, and London Array 1.
