Iberdrola completes 539MW Whitelee extension

UK: The UK's largest wind farm, Whitelee in southern Scotland, has just grown by 67%.

The project uses Alstom's ECO 100 turbine

ScottishPower Renewables, a subsidiary of Spain-based multinational utility Iberdrola, has completed expanding the facility, raising its capacity from 322MW to 539MW.

The growth has been achieved by installing 69 Alstom ECO 100 3MW turbines and six ECO 74 1.67MW units, also supplied by Alstom.

In 2010, Alstom was handed a EUR 200 million order by ScottishPower for a 217MW extension to Whitelee. The deal was part of a supply agreement with Iberdrola also covering projects in Wales and Spain.

The contract includes transportation, commissioning and maintenance.

At the time, Alstom hailed the deal as the first large-scale project to use the ECO 100 turbine. Whitelee also has 140 Siemens 2.3MW turbines.
