Based in the Somme department of northern France, the substations will be equipped with their own weather stations and be capable of instantly adapting the grid's configurations to supply, demand and weather conditions.
They will also be capable of quick analysis of line defaults, automatically "self-healing" the system by redirecting electricity flows where needed, says RTE.
Field trials for the €32 million project are scheduled for autumn 2015 with deployment across the rest of the country starting in 2020, says RTE. The programme is funded by Ademe, France's agency for environment and energy management, and its partners, Alstom Grid, Schneider Electric, Alcatel-Lucent, ERDF and Neelogy.
