Flidar's buoy for Dong Energy has been installed in the Irish Sea. Initially, the partnership comprises a one-year measurement campaign.
Dong Energy's Hugh Yendole said: "We are looking forward to seeing the results from the tests in the Irish Sea that will help to inform our potential future projects in the area."
In partnership with Centrica, Dong is planning a phased development of the 4.2GW Irish Sea Round 3 zone. The 2.2GW Rhiannon project represents the first phase.
Bruce Douglas, general manager at Belgian company Flidar, said the technology and partnership with Dong was "a major breakthrough for the offshore wind industry" that would deliver "further cost reductions for offshore wind resource assessments".
The equipment has previously been tested and validated in the North and Irish Seas, as part of the UK's Carbon Trust Offshore Wind Accelerator programme.
